Watership Down
Richard Adams
p. 136

The main antagonist hasn't been introduced yet. I know it will be General Woundwort, but I can't describe him because he doesn't come in until later. This story is about rabbits, and they have their own mythology and words. They have this word "elil" which means "enemies", and they often say they have 1,000 of them. Rabbits are hunted by animals like humans, foxes, badgers, and dogs, and these "elil" are kind of minor antagonists. They are just natural prey for a lot of animals.

  1. How do you know that the general is going to be the antagonist? Do the rabbits foreshadow that he is going to attack them?
